Hogan: Bergen election turnout down, but seven-fold plus increase in early voting.

Final figures on the Nov. 6 election released by Bergen County Clerk John Hogan show that turnout was down from the last presidential election year in 2008 by more than 7 percent.

However, the use of mail-in ballots, which includes in-person vote by mail or early ballots, was up by nearly 84 percent over 2008 and up by 773 percent over last year’s election.

Hogan credited the impact of Superstorm Sandy with driving up the number of 28,434 mail-in ballots that the county processed this year.
